Gluten sensitivity occurs in people with celiac disease (CD). People suffering from CD are unable to eat gluten, the protein found in wheat, barley and rye. People with CD suffer from a wide variety of symptoms, including digestive and neurological symptoms, which has led to conjecture about a possible link with Parkinson's disease.

Considerations

CD is an autoimmune disorder that affects 1 in 133 people worldwide. In these people, gluten attacks the small finger-like projections in the intestines called villi, which leads to malabsorption of nutrients.

Associations

Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder that affects 1.5 million Americans. It usually affects people over the age of 50 and is characterized by tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement and impaired balance. There has been much conjecture about a possible link between CD and Parkinson's, although there have been no conclusive studies thus far.

Neurological symptoms can occur in CD patients even when they have no digestive problems. This is one of the main reasons why CD is under-diagnosed and is not usually suspected when patients present with neurological problems. In 1966, researchers, Cooke and Smith, first described the neurological manifestations of CD, which included: peripheral neuropathy, myelopathy, optic myopathy, epilepsy and dementia. Prior to that doctors only associated CD with gastrointestinal problems such as: weight fluctuations, diarrhea and/or constipation, anemia and vitamin deficiency.

The fact is that even when CD patients exhibit no digestive symptoms, neurological problems can occur. In 2008, Mayo Clinic researchers uncovered a definitive link between CD and dementia and cognitive decline. According to many medical practitioners, CD should be considered when diagnosing patients with neurological symptoms even when there is no gastrointestinal issue.

Studies

Recent studies have suggested that an even wider spectrum of neurological disorders may be associated with CD and gluten sensitivity: migraine, encephalopathy, chorea, brain stem dysfunction, myelopathy, mono neuritis multiplex and a Guillain-Barre-like syndrome. These associations need to be confirmed by larger epidemiological studies. Other studies have shown a high incidence of gluten sensitivity in genetic neurodegenerative disorders such as hereditary spinocerebellar ataxia and Huntington's disease.

Studies of the gluten-free diet in patients with gluten sensitivity and neurological syndromes have shown mixed results. Diet trials of patients with schizophrenia and autism, two diseases associated with CD, proved inconclusive. Further studies of the effect of a gluten-free diet on the nervous system need to be conducted.

Theories/Speculation

Theories to explain the connection between CD and cognitive decline include the following, according to Dr. Joseph Murray of the Mayo Clinic:

1) Nutritional deficiency

2) Inflammatory cytokines--chemical messengers of inflammation that might cause problems in the brain

3) Immune attacks on the brain that may occur in some patients with CD

Conclusions

For CD patients who have already developed cognitive decline, closely following a gluten-free diet may improve symptoms. Although no correlation between PD and CD has been identified thus far, there is enough research to suggest that patients with CD and neurological symptoms that mimic PD (such as tremors, cognitive decline and neuropathy) may improve on a gluten-free diet.

History

The field of health economics has its beginnings in a 1963 article in the American Economic Review by economist Kenneth Arrow. The article examined health insurance markets, physician-patient relationships and the role of government in health care. These issues have remained central topics in health economics, as well as various measures of health status, such as average lifespan and infant mortality rates.

Significance

Most health care issues, such as medical costs, prescription drug prices and the methods of financing medical care, have economic dimensions to them. This may subject them to more serious illnesses, which require longer, more expensive treatment.

The Social Security number has become an unofficial national identifier, although its disclosure is required in only limited instances.

Each year, 8 million to 9 million Americans become victims of identity theft. The Social Security Number (SSN) has become a widespread identifier in all matters public or private, and is used in a great many different contexts, including employee files, medical records, insurance policies, credit and banking accounts. Unfortunately, this makes it very desirable for identity thieves, who use Social Security numbers to gain access to and exploit private information.

Government Agencies

You may have to give your SSN to certain government agencies--for instance, tax agencies, welfare offices and state departments of motor vehicles. Laws have been enacted, however, to protect citizens. For example, the Privacy Act of 1974 requires that all government agencies--federal, state or local--that request SSNs provide a disclosure statement. The statement should explain whether the SSN is required or optional and how it will be used. If an agency refuses to grant you a disclosure statement, you should contravene by citing the Privacy Act of 1974.

Private Businesses

Generally, you are not legally obligated to provide your Social Security number to most businesses, except in the case of financial transactions covered under anti-terrorism legislation and transactions that require IRS notification. However, some companies might refuse to do business with you if you don’t provide your SSN. As of July 2010, no law prevents businesses from asking for your number and few regulate what a business can do with it. Never divulge your SSN during a business transaction unless it is absolutely necessary.

Insurance companies and credit card applications

Insurance companies and credit card issuers usually request SSNs on applications for their services. For instance, administrators of government health care programs such as Medicaid and Medicare sometimes request a Social Security number. Private insurers are not legally allowed to ask for a Social Security number. Still, they might refuse to issue a policy if you don’t provide it. Under a 2007 federal law, however, group health plans covering 20 or more members are required to provide SSNs of Medicare-eligible members and their dependents to help sort out coverage responsibilities.

You may not intentionally display any individual’s SSN on a website in such a way that is accessible to the general public. Interpret A Bone Density Scan

Certain risk factors make people more likely to develop osteoporosis or the loss of bone mass. These include age, menopause, being female, insufficient calcium and vitamin D, smoking, drinking alcohol and the long-term use of some drugs, such as steroids, Depo-Provera and anti-seizure drugs. If you have several of these risk factors, you should talk to your doctor about having a bone density test. It can determine whether you already have significant bone loss or if you are at risk for it. Interpreting the test results is fairly simple.

Instructions

1. Examine your T-score. This score compares the typical bone density of a healthy same-sex adult to your bone density. If you have a T-score of above -1, you do not need to worry about osteoporosis. A score below -2.5 indicates osteoporosis.

2. Discuss with your doctor some ways to increase your bone mass if your T-score is between -1 and -2.5. A T-score that falls into this range indicates that you have below normal bone mass. You do not have osteoporosis yet, but rather you are at risk of developing it. This condition is called osteopenia.

3. Examine your Z-score. The Z-score takes into account many different factors, such as weight, age, sex and racial/ethnic origin. Z-scores are used to determine whether your bone loss is caused by something other than aging. If this score is below -1.5, your doctor will need to identify the underlying cause. Determining what condition is causing your bone loss can help prescribe the appropriate course of treatment.

4. If your initial test was done with a peripheral device, ask your doctor to measure your bone density with a central device. A peripheral device measures bone density at the smaller bones. It isn't as accurate as the central device, which measures larger bones. If the peripheral device indicates bone loss, you should have these results confirmed with the central device.

Arizona Medicaid Rules

The Arizona Medicaid program is also referred to as the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS). There are many different categories of Medicaid for adults and children, each with slightly different rules regarding coverage. If an individual is eligible for one Medicaid category, she is not eligible for any other category. Eligibility for Medicaid is largely determined by the income of the family in relation to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).

Pregnant Women

Pregnant women are protected under the Sixth Omnibus Reconciliation Act (SOBRA). To be eligible for Medicaid coverage, the woman must have an income of no more than 133% of the FPL (after deduction). This income limit "increases for each additional baby expected."

Breast and Cervical Cancer Program

To be eligible for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program, there is no income limit, but if the applicant is checked through the Arizona Well Woman Health Check Program, her income can be no more than 250 percent of the FPL. In order to be a part of this program, the patient must be diagnosed by the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, which then submits the diagnosis to AHCCCS.

Documented and Undocumented Aliens

Medicaid offers federal and state emergency services for documented and undocumented aliens. To be eligible for benefits, the alien must meet the financial requirements of the specific category of Medicaid they are wishing to receive. The only aliens eligible for these services are those who have resided in the U.S. for less than five years.

Family Planning

Arizona Medicaid offers family planning services to any women who lose SOBRA yet require family planning services within 60 days of delivering a child. Women are not eligible if they are more than 60 days postpartum or if they qualify for any other category of Medicaid.

Children Services

SOBRA children age zero to five are eligible for Medicaid if their family's income is 133 percent of FPL or less. SOBRA children age six through 18 are eligible if the family's income is 100 percent of FPL or less. The Health Center

Morning

The district nurse will prioritize her day, and morning visits may be planned around the urgency of a patient's needs or other considerations; for instance, hospital appointments. You can distribute your radio press release solo so staff reporters have all the information they need to relay the story to their audience. Instructions

Creating a Written Radio Press Release

1. Identify a news peg or feature story angle for your release. A news peg is a timely piece of information. A feature story angle is an interesting story element that is rare or heartwarming.

2. Identify the proper person to send your press release to. This is usually an associate producer or a public service announcement coordinator. Research the station's website or call and ask the station's receptionist to get a name.

3. Address your document like a formal letter. Place your contact information at the upper right hand corner. Place the reader's name, title and address below.

Choosing the surgeon is the most important step in this entire process because the quality of work will effect you for many years to come. Be sure to have several consultations with various surgeons and know your objectives.

For example, if you are looking to simply enhance a small chest you will not want Pamela Anderson or Victoria Beckham "balloons" which look like two melons placed oddly on your breast bone. This look is what I call the "American Breast Augmentation". All too often in USA surgeons use implants to make a caricature of women with an unnatural and very obvious implant. This is partly due to the long-time ban on silicone implants which are infinitely more natural looking and feeling than their saline counterparts. Due to this factor you should very seriously consider each doctor based on their results, which you should request to see at the time of consultation. My strongest recommendation is to choose a silicone implant that enhances you but is not too large, I will discuss proportionality in the last step.

2. Once you have chose your surgeon you want to decide between types of implants. Saline implants remain an option but in my honest opinion they are the worst option for many reasons. Firstly saline implants feel very unnatural. No matter what a doctor says to you I highly suggest you find a friend or someone you feel close with who has a saline implant and you actually FEEL it. It is hard, immobile, abnormally rounded, even the teardrop shaped ones, and worse yet if not filled properly you will hear it swishing around! On top of that saline implants have a much greater tendency to spontaneously "deflate". The worst story I have encountered was a patient who was at her wedding and in her beautiful wedding dress with cleavage showing when her left breast burst. It is not an instantaneous reaction but rather a slow leak which usually takes between a half hour to two hours to deflate. The end result is inevitably one large breast and one deformed looking small breast. Obviously this will necessitate further surgery and further costs, remember this is cosmetic surgery and this will not ever be covered by insurance.

My recommendation for those seeking breast augmentation is to seek out a surgeon who uses so-called cohesive gel implants. Cohesive gel implants are silicone implants made from a harder silicone which is more or less like a gummy bear. If you have ever cut a gummy bear in half you will note that there is no leak, no distortion in the shape of the gummy bear (it can easily be put back together and look normal if held there) and thus no danger. These implants do not leak silicone even if they are ruptured, they do not deflate, they hold their shape inside the capsule which is created by the body after implantation and most importantly, they feel and look much more natural.

3. Now deciding on the size is the most important part of the entire process. I suggest you bring a friend, NOT A LOVER, with you to your consultation. You should be very cognisant of your own proportions. For example if you have small hips and want a large chest it is NOT going to work. Your hips should correlate somewhat to the size of your breasts. If you have a very large bottom and hips and no chest then naturally larger implants will work well on you as this will be a normal dimension for your body frame. The things you want to keep in mind are the dimensions of your overall body, the larger the hips and smaller the breast to begin with the larger the implant you can go with, conversely the smaller your hips the smaller you should go. Your chest, as in thorax, is also a factor. If you have a wide thorax and small breasts then you will want to go a bit bigger to fill the chest out, but do keep in mind if you have a masculine body type with a large thorax and small pelvis you will come off very disproportionately. Breasts should always correlate with your pelvic structure and should never be unnaturally large unless you intend on having a career as a stripper, porn star or erotic model.

Finally the reason you brought your friend is to give you a second opinion and reality check. All too often doctors are eager to place larger implants than are prudent. This is less a problem in Europe where implants are truly used to "enhance" a small chest but more of an American problem where implants were made (in)famous in shows such as Baywatch and in Hollywood in general and the look as traditionally been, just as the photo of Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham, an unnatural. obvious, large and rounded look. Therefore do not let a surgeon talk you into implants you feel are too large and repeatedly stress you want a "natural" look and NOT an implant look. Also do not let yourself be talked into saline implants. Many surgeons have a vested interest in getting you to go with saline implants for many reasons including excess inventory since the reinstatement of silicone implants on the US market, future surgeries which are more of a guarantee with saline than any other implant, and also facility of implanting a deflated implant and filling it only when in your chest so as to make their job that much easier and the procedure that much faster.

Experiments with the irradiation of food began in 1916, just five years after the discovery and isolation of radium. The first interest in large scale radiation-sterilization of food was the U.S. military in the 1950s. Now, commercial food is routinely irradiated around the world to increase its shelf life. Many people -- including many scientists -- have warned that this practice is not as safe as advertised.

Radiomimesis

Irradiated food is not radioactive. It is radiomimetic. That means the changes produced in irradiated food can make the food damage DNA the same way as radiation, although the food itself is not radioactive. This distinction has been used by proponents of irradiation to suggest that, because the food is not rendered radioactive, there is no danger. George L. Tritsch, PhD, a cancer research specialist, testified before Congress in 1987 about the mutagenic effects of irradiated food on children, mice and flies. Children developed blood abnormalities. Mice developed grossly oversized hearts. Flies had mutated or dead offspring.

Occupational Safety

Workers employed by food irradiation facilities are endangered by the materials used to irradiate food. Since 1974, 54 accidents have been recorded by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) at 132 irradiation facilities. Because the NRC has no authority over many facilities, most observers believe this number is low. Workers are at risk from equipment malfunction, leaks and mishaps during transportation, installation and replacement.

Radiolytic Changes

Changes produced in irradiated food by the process of irradiation are potentially harmful. These changes are called radiolytic changes, and the substances formed in the process of radiation are called radiolytic products. Radiolytic products in irradiated food include elevated levels of benzene, formaldehyde and formic acid. Benzene is a confirmed carcinogen. Radiation also destroys nutrients, including vitamin A, B vitamins, vitamins C, E and K, as well as folic acid.

Precautionary Principle

Unknown dangers are as important as known dangers. Food irradiation, like many other technologies, has been employed without a full understanding of its long-term effects. 4. Exercise your and massage the heel. An easy way is to stretch that heel. You've probably done this quite a few times in gym class, when you were a kid. Or if you're in school at the moment. Sitting down on the floor, spread your legs, then reach toward the tip of your toe. The foot where you have the plantar fasciitis, obviously. Do this at least 10 times, holding it for 10 seconds a day. Also massage the heal as well. Physical therapy is a great way to help treat pain and relax tension in a specific area. Pay someone a dollar to give you a good foot massage. If you have bad foot odors, better make it a few extra.

5. Use splints when sleeping. Splints help keep the heel stretched. They'll provide the perfect amount of comfort to help you sleep throughout the night. Sleeping with plantar fasciitis can cause discomfort. You should see a doctor if pain symptoms continue to get worse.

Educational Prerequisites

In addition to your X-ray training, you will probably have to fulfill a core program of English, algebra, science and other electives as part of the degree requirements.

Proper Accreditation

Verify that the training institution you apply to is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. If you receive a diploma or certificate from a school that is not accredited by this committee, then you will not be a competitive job candidate.

Core Medical Technician Courses

When testing frequencies, it is 99.9 percent accurate and measures with a resolution of down to 0.01 hertz.

Located in Salt Lake City, the University of Utah offers a program that leads to a certificate in MRI technology.
