Plan the perfect '50s theme party for your friends and family.
Step back into time with a '50s drive-in diner birthday party. A '50s party is perfect for adults or children of all ages. From drive-ins to sock hops to soda shops, you can organize a memorable party your guests will be talking about for months to come. Hand out party favors and prizes, such as fuzzy dice and cat eyeglasses, to party guests and game winners to take home as mementos of the party.
Invitations
Print pictures of a '50s diner on card stock paper and write the party details on each picture. Another invitation idea is inflatable guitars. Inflate the guitars and use a paint pen to write the party details on each one. Deflate the guitars and mail to your party guests in padded envelopes. The party guests must inflate the guitars in order to read to invitation details. Alternatively, send a small plastic guitar in each envelope with the diner invitations for added decoration.
Decorations
Decorate the party area with black, white, pink and teal decorations. Turn the party room into a '50s diner with '50s-style tables and chairs to set the tone. Wall hangings that resemble the inside of a '50s diner are available online and at some party supply stores. Place black and white checkered tablecloths on all the party tables and use weighted-down Cola glasses as centerpieces. Rent or borrow a jukebox to add a nice touch to your '50s theme decorations. If you cannot rent or borrow a jukebox, make one using a large cardboard box and paint.
Food
Some food ideas for your '50s diner party include chicken wings or nuggets, French fries, meatballs, pizza, chips and club sandwiches. Another idea is to have a hot dog or hamburger buffet. Guests can build their own burgers or hot dogs. Place condiments like relish, mustard, ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and pickles on a table for them to use. For drinks, make real lemonade using water, lemons and sugar. Serve root beer floats in soda glasses and milk shakes topped with whipped cream and cherries for dessert.
Games
For a costume contest, ask your party guests to wear their best '50s outfit when sending out invitations. Award prizes for the best, funniest and silliest outfits. Test the knowledge of your guests with a '50s trivia music game. Divide the guests into two teams. Play songs from '50s artists like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Ray Charles. Play 15 seconds of a song and have a team try to guess the song. If they guess correctly, they earn a point. The team with the most points wins the game.
