South Carolina students can apply for a variety of journalism scholarships.
Scholarships are available for students in South Carolina who plan to pursue a career in the field of journalism. Scholarship eligibility is based on student grade point average or Scholastic Aptitude Test, SAT, scores, in addition to high school honors received, extracurricular activities, intended major area of study, high school involvement in journalism activities, volunteer or journalism-related work experience and demonstration of financial need. Scholarship areas of focus may include advertising and public relations, print and electronic journalism and visual communications.
National Association of Black Journalists
The National Association of Black Journalists, NABJ, provides scholarships for students who are enrolled or are entering a a four-year college or university degree in journalism. Students enrolled in graduate programs can also apply. As part of the application process, students must be a member of the NABJ, provide a copy of their resume, an essay, reference letters and examples of their work. As of 2010, scholarships range from $1,250 to $2,000 per year.
South Carolina Press Association
The South Carolina Press Association, SCPA, provides up to three scholarships offered annually to South Carolina junior college students. The maximum scholarship awarded is $3,500, as of 2010, to a student interested in pursuing a career in the field of newspaper journalism. Applicants must provide a statement of their interest in the field of journalism, work samples, a copy of their college transcript, extra-curricular activities and two letters of recommendation.
University of South Carolina Journalism Scholarships
The University of South Carolina, School of Journalism and Mass Communications, SJMC, offers scholarships for students who are accepted into the journalism program. Four major types of scholarships are offered which include: freshman and alumni freshman scholarships; scholarships for minority students attending a South Carolina high school who plan to pursue a career in the newspaper or media journalism field; scholarships for students who are members of the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association, SCSPA; and Southern Interscholastic Press Association, SIPA, scholarships aimed at students who have demonstrated a strong academic record and have experience working as broadcasting or publication staff.
Women's Basketball Coaches Association
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association awards the $4,000, as of 2010, Robin Roberts/WBCA Broadcasting Scholarship Award to a female basketball player in her senior year of college who plans to pursue a graduate degree and a career in journalism or sports communication. Students who receive a nomination from their head coach are eligible for the award. Nomination for the award is based on a head coach letter of recommendation, academic transcripts and current game statistics.
