Cathedral Crown Moulding Ideas

Cathedral ceilings make rooms seem greater with their exposed rafters and wood beams. Adding moulding to a room with cathedral ceilings can either accentuate a room's natural beauty or make it seem awkward and busy. When deciding to add crown moulding to cathedral ceilings, closely examine how balanced the room is or whether the architecture already has many lines and height variations.

Basic Crown Moulding

Most crown moulding looks best when it is kept on a horizontal plane that is balanced. Cathedral ceilings do not naturally offer this. One way to make the room appear to open up taking advantage of the ceiling is to measure the moulding along the highest horizontal line before the ceiling's lowest rising point. This creates a level box around the perimeter of the room maintaining balance and keeping eyes focused. If the ceilings have beams exposed, use simple moulding. Using something too ornate will distract from the many lines already existing in the room and make things busy.

Crown Moulding Samples

Crown moulding comes in many designs and serves as a frame to the room. If the ceiling is vaulted but finished with no beams exposed, more ornate moulding is a great way to add design to a room. Designs range from boxed lines, to scallops or floral designs integrated into the moulding. If your room will contain simple furnishings, more ornate designs can compliment the d#xE9;cor. If the d#xE9;cor is quite ornate itself, make sure to use moulding samples to ensure the moulding design does not detract from the d#xE9;cor within the room.

Preventing Mistakes

Placing the moulding along the ceiling line or too far low can throw the balance of a room off. Bright colored moulding can also throw the balance off. When in doubt, keep things simple when adding a frame to any part of a room. If you want to use moulding as an accent, place it over windows or doors as a mini-shelf. Moulding can also be used much lower if you are doing wainscoting to the room. This makes a distinct upper and lower room balance.
