There are 300,000 registered X-ray technicians in the U.S.
The X-ray machine and the people who run it are critical to medical diagnostics. Physicians rely heavily upon the imaging to make treatment decisions every day. X-ray technicians, also called radiologic technologists, need a specialized education to safely handle the equipment and accurately administer imaging tests. Choosing the best school is a matter of weighing important variables.
Credentials
X-ray technology schools offer certificates of completion, associate degrees and bachelor's degrees in radiography and radiologic technology. These programs range from one year of study to four-year programs. After passing a certification exam, and in some states getting a licence, graduates can work as radiologic technologists who take X-rays of patients for medical diagnoses.
Changes
Beginning in 2015, students will need more than a one-year certificate program to become X-ray technicians. They will need to earn an associate degree, bachelor's degree or graduate degree from an accredited school before sitting for the certification exam. The degree does not need to be in radiologic sciences.
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is the organization within the field that sets the standards for accrediting schools of radiologic technology. ARRT works to ensure high-quality professional education and work practices in radiology. Graduating students take ARRT certification tests before they can practice their profession. The ARRT certification standards are recognized nationally by employers, federal regulators and state licensing agencies.
Curricula
Students of radiologic technology study curricula that include subjects in pathophysiology, anatomy, physiology and the use of radiologic equipment. They learn to work with the patient, take accurate images and read the X-rays to make sure the can be useful to the physician.
School Choices
Dozens of colleges offer X-ray technologist training. It is important for students to choose an accredited school. To satisfy the education requirements and sit for the certification exam, you must attend a school that is accredited by an agency that the ARRT recognizes. Look for a school that is accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The ARRT website has an extensive list of accredited schools.
