White spots on the chest
Regardless of the reasons, it can be embarrassing when your skin starts to undergo obvious changes. If you've recently found that you have white spots developing on your chest, there are a few conditions that might be causing them.
Tinea Versicolor
Tinea versicolor is a condition in which a fungus that occurs naturally on everyone's skin starts to rapidly multiply and colonize in small spots or patches. This can result in white spots on the affected area, including the chest. According to the National Institutes of Health, young men are most likely to develop this condition.
Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a condition in which spots and patches of the skin lose their pigment, giving them a white appearance. The National Institutes of Health reports that vitiligo can run in families and typically begins between the ages of 20 and 30.
Lichen Sclerosus
Lichen sclerosus is another skin condition that can cause white spots or patches on the chest and other parts of the body. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, the skin will become very thin and wrinkled, and is prone to bruising.
Significance
Of these three diseases, lichen sclerosus can cause the most physical harm because of the possibility of bleeding and scarring related to the patches. These skin conditions are not considered life-threatening.
Treatments
Treatment will vary depending upon the cause, but it is recommended that you stay out of the sun or use sunscreen for any of them in order to minimize the appearance of the white spots or patches.
