X-ray technicians take images of bones and other unseen parts of the body.
X-ray technicians, also known as radiologists, perform medical tests using X-ray equipment, mammography, computed tomography and other technologies. They are trained to use this potentially dangerous equipment accurately and safely. To become an X-ray technician in Georgia you'll need to fulfill the state and federal requirements regarding education, training and licensing. To enroll in a training program you'll need to fulfill that institution's educational prerequisites.
Formal Education
You need a college degree in medical imaging or a closely related field to become an X-ray technician in Georgia. Emory University and Armstrong Atlantic State University offer four-year programs for X-ray technicians, and both are accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. Coursework covers topics such as anatomy, medical terminology, processing and radiographic techniques, and radiology. To enroll, you must fulfill the school's humanities, social science, mathematics and natural science prerequisites (check individual schools for specific requirements. See Resources). Students will also complete internships that provide them with hands-on experience.
Training
After completing a degree program, new X-ray technicians may be hired at hospitals, medical clinics and other healthcare facilities in Georgia. Major employers include Emory University Hospital, Piedmont Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital. These facilities offer on-the-job training for X-ray technicians. New technicians become acquainted with hospital operations and policies, available facilities and other aspects of the job through training, which typically lasts a few weeks. New technicians train with more experienced members of the team.
Licensing and Certification
According to Glacier Valley Medical Education, the state of Georgia does not currently require any licensing for X-ray technicians. However, voluntary certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is highly recommended and can expand your employment opportunities. To be eligible for this certification, you must graduate from an ARRT-approved accredited program and pass an exam. To maintain this license, you must complete 24 hours of continuing education classes biannually.
Continuing Education
X-ray technicians may increase their earnings and advance in the field by learning new skills and specializing in advanced areas of the field, such as CT scanning, bone densitometry, mammography and MRI scanning.
