X-ray technologists take images of patients' bones or tissues. Their work is very important. They help doctors make a diagnosis by providing him with the information he needs. Instructions
1. Wait until you are at least 18 years of age. You have to be 18 to be accepted by an X-ray technology program. Provide a high school transcript that shows you graduated with classes in English and math. You also should have taken chemistry, physics or biology.
2. Earn an associate degree in an x-ray or radiologic technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiographic Technology or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. You will learn anatomy, physiology and imaging technology.
3. Pay close attention to all your studies. You'll have to be very precise with the position of the equipment to get the right image. If you feel you don't understand something, ask for help. Make sure you understand every aspect of your future job.
4. Become a licensed x-ray technologist. Forty states require that you be licensed to do an x-ray technologist job. In 35 states you will take an American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) administered test to become certified. 5. Develop a lot of stamina. You may be lifting and turning disabled patients, and you'll be on your feet most of the day. Learn to put the patient's comfort and safety first. You'll be explaining the procedure and having them remove clothes and jewelry so it won't block the image. You'll also be putting patients in position for the best images. Treat patients with respect and show compassion to them and their family members.
6. Look in newspaper ads and online medical job boards for open positions. Apply at hospitals, clinics and doctor's offices. Check college job placement departments. Let everyone know you're looking for an x-ray technologist job. You should easily find employment in this field.
7. Complete 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years to be re-certified.
