Lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women, behind breast cancer. It is, however, the most common cause of cancer deaths each year in women. Signs and symptoms of lung cancer can often be difficult to notice or not present at all in the initial stages of the disease.
Absence Of Symptoms
About a quarter of all those afflicted with lung cancer experience no symptoms whatsoever, and are first made aware of their diagnosis as a result of a routine CT scan or chest X-ray.
Importance
While it is true that symptoms can often be absent or hard to identify, knowing the symptoms can help you catch it quickly if cancer is in fact present.
Cough
A distinctly new cough in a smoker or former smoker, a cough that includes blood or a cough that get worse or does not go away over time should all be considered potential symptoms of lung cancer.
Chest Pains
A dull, persistent and aching chest pain is experienced in approximately a quarter of women with lung cancer.
Respiratory Issues
Many women with lung cancer will show symptoms of respiratory failure, such as wheezing, shortness of breath and hoarseness.
