Convert A Van For A Wheelchair

Wheelchair accessible vans enable wheelchair users to meet their transport needs without depending on others. These transport vehicles are assembled by professionals and therefore ensure reliability and safety for the users, providing them an opportunity to enjoy greater freedom and independence. It is important to decide on the type of mobility conversion you would prefer to make your van wheelchair-friendly. This can be either a side-entry or rear-entry conversion. Modifications are performed based on this decision. Here is a guide to making your van wheelchair-accessible through side-entry.

Instructions

1. Discuss with your mobility conversion dealer about the required measure of van-floor lowering that would be comfortable for the user. Since wheelchairs are taller in build than normal vehicle chairs, the van floor needs to be lowered to accommodate the wheel chair. The flooring is generally lowered by 10 to 12 inches in minivans. In vans of bigger size, a drop of 6 to 8 or 10 inches is customary.

2. Clear out the inside of the van where the wheelchair will enter. It's important to have ample space for the wheelchair user to enter and exit without any complications.

3. Raise the level of the van roof. Heightening the roof of the van is preferable since it provides more space for the wheelchair user to enter through the door conveniently.

4. Install a ramp at the side passenger entry of the van. The ramp allows the wheelchair user to glide into the vehicle easily without strain and effort. The side-entry offers the user easy access to the driver seat as well as the passenger position.

5. Install remote control activation to operate the ramp. This is particularly useful for wheelchair users that are sensitive to temperatures and are located in places with climatic conditions that make them vulnerable. It usually takes 30 to 60 seconds for a ramp to get functional. In such cases, the remote system enables users to ready the ramp for use from their comfort zones.

6. Contact dealers that are NMEDA QAP accredited (National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association Quality Assurance Program), for your mobility conversion.
