Pros & Cons Of Adderall

Adderall is a prescription drug that can treat ADD/ADHD and narcolepsy.

Adderall is a brand of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. It is an oral medication prescribed to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD), hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. When taken correctly, Adderall can significantly help those plagued with the previously mentioned conditions. The side effects and risks, however, are very dangerous.

It Treats ADD and ADHD

Adderall is a stimulant that changes the levels of certain chemicals in the brain, according to Body and Health. It can increase the attention span in children older than 6 and adults. It can also decrease impulsiveness and hyperactivity in those with ADHD. Stimulants have the opposite effect on people who are already over-stimulated. In these case, Adderall actually has a calming effect. Changes in behavior can begin as soon as one week into treatment with Adderall.

It Treats Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a disorder that causes people to fall asleep during unusual times, according to eMed TV. It is uncontrollable and can be dangerous, depending on the situation the patient is in when he falls asleep. Adderall is prescribed at a higher dosage for those suffering from narcolepsy. The higher dosage keeps patients stimulated, so they are unable to fall asleep during the day.

Serious Side Effects

According to Yahoo! Health, Adderall can cause several side effects, ranging from minor to severe. Irregular heart beats, fainting, increased blood pressure and tremors can all occur as a result of Adderall. Less serious side effects include dry mouth, insomnia, weight loss, diarrhea, constipation and loss of interest in sex. Weight loss results because Adderall suppresses appetites.

Addictive

According to the Washingtonian, Adderall can be as addictive as methamphetamine or cocaine. When snorted, it has greater potency and a greater chance of causing side effects. Like all stimulants, Adderall releases adrenaline and stress hormones. The result is a high that can become addictive.

Death

According to Yahoo! Health, those with heart problems or arteriosclerosis should not take Adderall XR. Stimulants can cause sudden death in people with these issues. Adderall XR is an extended release form of Adderall. It is taken once a day, instead of multiple times a day, and continues to work in the system throughout the day. According to Drug News, Adderall XR was taken off the shelves in Canada in 2005 when 20 sudden deaths were linked to the drug. Twelve of the sudden deaths were due to strokes brought on by Adderall XR.
