Harley Davidson 96 Ci Specifications & Oil Capacity

The newest generation in Harley-Davidson Big Twin performance, the Twin Cam 96 air-cooled V-Twin 45-degree engine debuted along with a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission in 2007 on all Touring, Softail and Dyna models, setting a standard in the motorcycling industry. Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) is the hallmark fuel system of the Twin Cam 96. With a larger displacement and innovative design enhancements, the Twin Cam 96 is powerful, reliable and smooth.

Displacement

The powerful Twin Cam 96 cubic-inch powertrain displaces 1584cc and delivers a 17-percent boost in torque over the previous Twin Cam 88. Lower cruising rpm's translates into more comfort on long rides.

Crankcase

The Twin Cam 96 features a new crankcase design with the starter bolted directly to the inner primary housing. This eliminates the starter jackshaft and provides improved starter performance. An integral oil filter adapter eliminates gaskets and hardware. Due to the internal oil passages between the engine and transmission, external oil lines and fittings are also eliminated.

Reduced Reciprocating Mass

Vibration is reduced and performance enhanced with lighter pistons and lighter, shorter connecting rods. The Twin Cam 96 is significantly smoother than the previous Twin Cam 88 at most engine speeds.

Camshaft

Hydrostatic, plain cam bearings replace roller bearings used in the previous Twin Cam 88, offering increased durability and quieter operation. This new camshaft design features multi-piece assembled camshafts to replace the forged, single-piece cams of the Twin Cam 88. A hydraulic automatic cam chain tensioner replaces a single-loaded mechanical tensioner for overall improved performance.

Exhaust

The Twin Cam 96 exhaust is tuned for optimum exhaust flow, performance and a commanding exhaust tone.

Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI)

With new feedback sensors and fuel injector nozzles three times the size of the injectors on the Twin Cam 88, the improved electronic fuel injection system helps reduce exhaust emissions and improves overall driveability and performance.

Oil Pump and Capacity

The Twin Cam 96 is equipped with a newly designed oil pump assembly that provides 10-percent more flow and 23-percent more scavenging capacity than the Twin Cam 88. An integrated oil cooler adapter also improves performance of the oil pump. Oil capacity is 3-quarts.

Transmission

The 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission of the Twin Cam 96 is quieter and requires less maintenance than the previous 5-speed transmission. Its shift points are optimized to perfectly match the performance output of the engine. The steel and aluminum shift drum is lighter than earlier engines and lowers shift forces, making for a better shift feel and shift completion. The addition of dog ring shifting reduces shifting effort, making shifts faster and smoother.
