A vintage cake topper can bestow any wedding cake with a sense of timeless elegance.
A vintage wedding cake topper can take a variety of forms. For example, it could simply be a plastic or porcelain figurine of a bride and groom standing at the top of the cake gazing into each other's eyes. Or it could be a pair of sterling silver birds with a miniature arbor made out of lace. Regardless of what your vintage cake topper looks like, it can effortlessly add a timeless elegance to a modern cake. However, if you've inherited this cake topper, it might need some restoration before going on your cake.
Instructions
1. Run a hand-held vacuum cleaner very lightly over the surface area of the wedding cake topper. Fill a small pan with warm water and add a squirt of mild detergent to the pan. Combine the detergent with the water using your hand, letting it become slightly sudsy.
2. Dip a cotton swab in the water and run it over the wedding cake topper, removing dust and years of accumulated dirt. Repeat this step with the cotton swab, getting into the crevices of the of the cake topper. Rinse by dipping a cotton ball in clean water and wiping down the topper. Allow it to dry.
3. Check for chips or cracks and fill with epoxy, pushing it into cracks with a cotton swab. Sand down your work with a small square of 80-grit sandpaper.
4. Look for areas where the paint has faded or scraped off. Mix colors of acrylic paint in your palette, matching the colors as closely as possible to the ones on your cake topper.
5. Dip your fine-tipped brush in the requisite colors and add light coats of paint to the necessary areas. Allow it to dry thoroughly.
6. Turn the figurine around replacing missing rhinestones or pearls in the requisite areas by adding dots of glue and pressing the rhinestones or pearls in place.
7. Snip off tatters of lace or tulle. Measure a new piece of lace or tulle to the requisite length and attach with a hot glue gun.
