Pros Of Choosing A Career As A Medical Doctor

Becoming a medical doctor has many benefits.

If you're considering becoming a medical doctor, you already know that you have at least eight years of schooling in front of you, so you may be asking yourself if it's worth it. A medical doctor is a professional unlike any other. You'll make good money and help people from all walks of life, and people always need health care.

Income

Medical doctors in general make significantly more money than the average U.S. household, which made $52,029 in 2008, according to the U.S. Census. The average salary of a doctor varies, depending on what kind of doctor you are, but starts at an average of $139,542 for a family doctor to an average of $245,791 for an anesthesiologist, according to Payscale.com. As a medical doctor, you can expect to live comfortably in nearly any city in the United States.

Enjoying Your Work

Chances are, if you're putting yourself through at last eight years of higher education, you're pursuing a career that you enjoy. Whether you enjoy making a difference in people's lives or simply enjoy the money aspect, enjoying your job makes getting up and going to work easier than if you despised it. Much of the stress that comes from working stems from people's displeasure in the job itself; if you like your profession, you're more likely to lead a stress-free life.

Helping People

Whether helping others is your primary reason for becoming a medical doctor or not, knowing that you are directly responsible for helping someone can induce a feeling of euphoria. Not everyone is going to thank you when you treat them, but you at the end of the day, you can go home knowing that you made a difference in people's lives.

Each Day Is Different

Many jobs consist of the same, monotonous routine of getting up, going to work and performing the same tasks. A medical doctor doesn't have a legitimate routine. Each day in a doctor's life is completely different than another, and this is especially true if you work in a hospital. One day may consist of patients with minor illnesses, while the next may have you saving someone's life. The day-to-day change as a medical doctor keeps you on your toes and doesn't allow you to sink into a boring routine.
