Idaho Medicaid Eligibility Requirements

Medicaid is a program that is jointly funded by the federal and state governments but administered by the states. Medicaid provides medical and health care coverage for eligible low-income families and individuals. Most Idaho Medicaid coverage requires minor children to be living in the household. Pregnant women, women with cervical or breast cancer, seniors over 65 and disabled adults may also be covered if they meet the general eligibility and income requirements

General Requirements

Anyone applying for any of the Medicaid or other health insurance programs available in Idaho must meet certain basic requirements. First, the applicant must provide proof that she is a United States citizen or legal noncitizen and an Idaho resident. All applicants will also need to provide proof of household income and resources such as bank accounts, stocks, bonds, vehicles and real property. Shelter and housing expenses will also need to be documented.

Income Limits

Income limits apply to all Idaho Medicaid programs. The income limits are very low if adults are also applying. For instance, a family of four may not earn more than $383 per month to qualify for coverage. That same household, however, could be eligible for coverage for children under the age of 19 who are in the home with income of up to $2,444 a month. The same income limit applies to a family applying with a pregnant women in the home.

SCHIP

For household's that do not qualify for traditional Medicaid coverage because the household exceeds the income limits, Idaho offers the Idaho State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The SCHIP program provides the same basic benefits for children under the age of 19 that Medicaid provides at a small monthly cost. For instance, the same family of four could have monthly earned income of up to $3,400 per month and still be eligible for SCHIP coverage. Participants pay a monthly premium of $10 to $15 for SCHIP coverage.
