Make Junk Metal Art Without Welding

Junk metal can be used in art projects without welding.

Junk metal comes in a wondrous variety of shapes and sizes to inspire artists. Yet many people are put off the idea of working with metal because they don't know weld. While knowledge of welding is necessary for large-scale projects, smaller scale art projects can be bound with wire or metal epoxies, which can be bought from automotive part suppliers.

Instructions

1. Rub off any rust or flakes on your junk metal pieces with steel wool. Wash the pieces thoroughly with soapy water and wipe with rags till completely dry.

2. Mix up equal parts hardener and resin in a plastic tray with a wooden spatula according to manufacturer's instructions. Apply the mix to the surfaces you want to bond and press them together. Do this as quickly as possible as the mixture will start to set within a few minutes.

3. Bind the pieces in place with rubber tubing or elastic bands (depending on the size of the project) to keep them clamped together while the adhesive dries. Leave for three hours to four hours (or according to manufacturer's insructions) to dry and bond fully.

4. Remove elastic binds from your piece.

Tips Warnings

Metal epoxies are toxic and should not be inhaled, ingested or absorbed into the skin. Always wear gloves when with working with a metal epoxy and do so in a well-ventilated area.
