Interventional Radiology Technologist Objectives

Safety is one of the main objectives in interventional radiology.

Interventional radiology uses radiologic technologies, such as x-ray, ultrasound, CT scan and MRI, to diagnose and treat certain medical conditions. There are three main objectives for an interventional radiology technologist: patient safety, accurate disease diagnosis and disease treatment.

Safety

Every radiologic test carries a certain amount of risk, including radiation exposure. The more invasive the test or interventional radiology procedure, the greater the risk. Technologists train in patient safety protocols and the required procedures needed before, during and after each test. For some procedures, technologists administer medications in accordance with strict safety guidelines. They maintain a safe working and testing environment at all times. Technologists communicate clearly and effectively, in a compassionate and professional manner, with patients and staff.

Diagnosis

Interventional radiology technologists take images that assist specialists in diagnosing certain medical conditions. Their main objective is to get as clear an image as possible and file reports that describe the patient and the conditions under which the test was conducted. Technologists are skilled in a number of radiographic test procedures. They follow strict protocols at all times in capturing the diagnostic images on the various devices in order to maintain a high professional standard and help diagnose disease accurately.

Treatment

Interventional radiology is designed to treat diseases that have been diagnosed by radiologic tests, such as cardiac catheterization. In some cases, the treatment is performed at the time of the testing, so clear images must be taken to help the cardiologist. The technologist monitors the patient continually throughout the tests and procedures for any signs of cardiac or other distress.
