Summertime in the Bronx is ideal for Bronx teens to earn revenue, gain experience and contribute to New York's northern-most borough. According to the Bronx Historical Society, the Bronx received an All-American City Award in1997 for effectively restoring its neighborhoods. The community efforts make the Bronx attractive for tourists and employment. South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (SoBRO) a non-profit committed to qualitatively enriching the lives of South Bronx residents, encourages local businesses to hire and mentor Bronx youth.
Paid Job Training
The Summer Youth Program, providing work and job education skills, is open to New York City residents, ages 18 to 24 in all five boroughs of New York City through a lottery system. According to Andrew Doba, Chief Public Information Officer, as of 2010, Bronx residents comprised 25 percent of the applicants.
Rocking the Boat is a Bronx environmental program offering two youth initiatives. The Youth Development and Job Skills operate year-round. Job Skills offers a summer program that provides on-the-job training with paid stipends to participants. The apprentices learn carpentry, CPR and water techniques related to boat-building and rowing. Apprentices provides free boat rides throughout the summer. The summer program begins early July and runs through August. Job Skills applicants must be 16 years old, with previous participation in the Youth Development program as a requisite.

The Yankees corporation, the administration for The New York Yankees, situated in the South Bronx typically has Yankee stadium employment. Technically the Yankee season begins in the spring, but when school is out for summer, the fan base increases substantially. Food service positions subcontract through Human Resources with Legends Hospitality Management. Other Yankee applicants can check openings on the Yankee website. The Bronx Botanical Garden employs summer workers during the week and on the weekend. Job positions offered include educational office assistants, and the visitor's office seasonal attendants.
Internships
The Butterfly Garden in The Bronx Zoo hires Butterfly Associates.
As of 2011, for the past 16 years, The Point Community Development Corporation has created summer internships for high school and college students. The students participate in collaborative projects concerning the arts, environmental policies and social justice, according to Danny Peralta, director of Arts and Education. Students receive college or high school credit for work hours.
Students interested in veterinary medicine or who love animals can apply for summer intern positions with The Bronx Zoo. Potential applicants can apply through Wildlife Conservation Society(WCS) the parent company website. Bronx Zoo positions include Camel Barn Associate, Butterfly Garden Associate and Children's Zoo Associate. Although WCS actively seeks responsible and conscientious interns, the number of applications received makes the process highly competitive.
Considerations
The Bronx is home to many art, cultural and environmental organizations that do not actively list summer employment. An option in summer job searching, is to call cultural, community or neighborhood organizations and inquire if work is available or ask for referrals.
