The Tar Heel state offers plenty of breast cancer assistance
A diagnosis of breast cancer may bring on a spate of concerns ranging from legal to financial to emotional. Residents of North Carolina enjoy a multitude of options when accessing breast cancer resources.
Financial
Individuals receiving treatment at a local, North Carolina health department (and who meet lower income guidelines) may be eligible to have their treatment paid for by the Breast and Cervical Cancer Medicaid program (BCCM). The North Carolina Cancer Assistance Program of the North Carolina Division of Public Health also provides financial assistance for diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
Support Groups
The Breast Cancer Resource Directory of North Carolina provides contact information for all breast cancer support groups in each county of the state. Most are free of charge and open to survivors and family members.
Mentors
Women Building Bridges serves as a volunteer-driven organization providing emotional assistance to those suffering from breast cancer. Every volunteer in the group is a breast cancer survivor, and acts as a sort of mentor to guide the newly diagnosed through the process.
Cancer Hospitals
North Carolina is home to three of the 50 hospitals in the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Centers Program. These include Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center in Durham, the University of North Carolina's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Winston-Salem.
Community Groups
Winston-Salem's Cancer Services, Inc., provides financial assistance, wigs, prostheses, and travel assistance, in addition to support groups, for those battling breast cancer. Chapel Hill's Cornucopia House Cancer Support Center provides complementary alternative therapies like yoga, meditation, and support groups.
