Improve Employability Skills
Your dream job is not always immediately accessible. This is often the case if you have just graduated from high school or college, are returning to the workforce after an extended break or are looking to move into a different field. However, you do not have to settle for something less than you want. There are steps you can take that, in a short time, will improve your employability and provide you with skills that will remain valuable throughout your professional life.
Instructions
1. Work diligently in school, because many employers will examine your transcript if you are a fresh graduate. Academic achievement awards --- an added bonus --- will show your employer that you strive for excellence and are capable of achieving goals.
2. Take a class or have a computer-savvy friend tutor you in the basic programs for word processing, creating databases and spreadsheets, and putting together slide presentations.
3. Increase your typing speed by practicing with a computer program or web site (see Resources for examples).
4. Work on learning a foreign language or improving language skills you acquired in high school or college.
5. Sign up for an internship at a company or organization in the field that you hope to enter. It will provide you with relevant skills and experience that can make you an ideal entry-level candidate.
6. Work on improving your social and interpersonal skills, which are key to success in any office environment and job that involves liaising with other departments or companies. Make an effort to attend events at which you do not know anyone and try to meet and talk with as many new people as you can.
7. Volunteer regularly in order to show employers that you are passionate about working and making a contribution regardless of remuneration.
