Lead aprons are necessary when working near X-ray machines or similar equipment. X-rays and gamma radiation can bombard the cells in the body, causing them to die or mutate, which could eventually lead to medical problems. Lead is impervious to such radiation. Because imaging equipments are commonly used in medical settings, suppliers have developed a number of styles, sizes, prints and coverings for lead aprons.
Dental Aprons
These lead aprons are designed exclusively for use with dental X-ray machines. They generally consist of a flat panel covering the upper torso and straps that fold over the shoulders to hold the apron in place. These are aprons in name only, as one cannot actually stand up and move around while keeping the apron in place.
Standard Frontal Protection Aprons
These are basic lead aprons that medical professionals use. They consist of two or more lead panels draped across the front to cover the torso and upper legs of the wearer. Protective flaps drape over the shoulders and connect in back. There is usually a strap or belt to hold the apron closed around the midsection.
Wrap-Around Aprons
These are similar the frontal protection aprons except that instead of being tied around the middle with a belt or strap, the entire panel of the apron wraps around the body, providing protection to the front and back of the wearer.
Half Aprons
These are similar to frontal protection aprons except that they only cover the lower torso and pelvis. They can either wrap entirely around the wearer's pelvis like a skirt or simply consist of one panel secured in place with a belt or strap draped around the hips.
Two-Piece Aprons
These aprons consist of separate skirt or kilt portions and vest portions. They are typically made in the wrap-around style to provide X-ray protection to the front and back.
Maternity Aprons
These aprons are designed with the expectant mom in mind. No amount of lead shielding can ensure total protection from harmful radiation, however these aprons include extra shielding around the location of the growing baby.
Weight-Relieving Aprons
Lead is heavy and these weight-relieving aprons are designed to better distribute the weight across the wearer's body rather than focusing it on the back and shoulders, as other lead aprons do. This is especially necessary for X-ray technicians and other people who may have to wear a lead apron for extended periods of time without relief, which leads to fatigue and chiropractic problems.
