Nursing students can receive money from the Army ROTC Nursing Scholarship.
The U.S. Armed Forces offers scholarships for undergraduate- and graduate-level students enrolled in health care programs. Each scholarship has its own eligibility requirements. Certain programs offer full tuition and stipends ranging from a few hundred, to a few thousand dollars per month. Scholarships can require extracurricular activities, such as summer training programs, and typically require recipients to serve in active duty after graduation. Educational assistance offered by the armed forces can help pay for medical, psychology, nursing, dentistry and veterinary degree programs.
Army ROTC Nursing Scholarship
The Army ROTC Nursing Scholarship program offers two- to four-year scholarships for undergraduate nursing students. Participants can receive full tuition, book allowances and monthly stipends from $300 to $500 per month, as of February 2011. The program also includes the Army ROTC Nurse Summer Training Program, an opportunity for students to receive three weeks of paid training in Army medical facilities. Scholarship recipients must serve as an officer in the U.S. Army for four years after graduation.
Health Professions Scholarship Program
The U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy offer the Health Professions Scholarship Program, HPSP, for students enrolled in graduate-level medical, optometry, dental, psychology and veterinary degree programs. Candidates must have already earned a bachelor's degree and must hold U.S. citizenship. The program only extends eligibility to students enrolled full time at colleges and universities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Applicants must meet the qualifications for commissioned U.S. Army Reserve officers. HPSP provides full tuition and a monthly allowance of $2,000, as of February 2011. Scholarship recipients also receive paid training during school breaks. The program requires recipients to serve as an officer for one year in the U.S. Army for each year they receive funding.
Navy Health Services Collegiate Program
The Navy Health Services Collegiate Program, HSCP, awards funding to dental and medical students. HSCP offers recipients a yearly salary of up to $55,000, as of February 2011, while they complete their medical degree programs. The program allows awardees to receive non-military grants and scholarships to help pay for their education. The Navy also offers HSCP recipients dental and medical benefits, shopping privileges at military stores and travel benefits. Candidates must enroll in a dental or medical program and hold U.S. citizenship. The HSCP requires recipients to joint the Navy Medical Corps. after graduation and serve in active duty for a minimum of three years.
Navy Nurse Candidate Program
The U.S. Navy's Nurse Candidate Program, NCP, provides grant money for school and a monthly allowance. Candidates must enroll full time in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and can only apply after their second year in college. As of February 2011, the initial grant pays $10,000 in two $5,000 installments. Awardees can also receive a $1,000 per month stipend for up to two years. The NCP requires recipients to enter the Navy Nurse Corps. after graduation for up to four years. Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship, meet Navy fitness requirements and be 40 years of age or younger.
