The freedom of the open road
In Pennsylvania, you are required by law to submit paperwork for a driver's license within 60 days of becoming a resident. Changing your driver's license is always an arduous process, but fortunately, Pennsylvania offers a clear step-by-stop process.
Instructions
1. Familiarize yourself with the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (see Resources). While drivers with a license that is either current or has been expired for less than six months will not be required to take a skills test, it's good to know the specific rules of the road and how they may vary from what you're used to.
2. Fill out form DL-180R. Form DL-180R asks for personal information such as name and address, and it also asks about medical problems that may give you difficulty while driving. Answer the form clearly and honestly. The form is one page, with the second page containing information about where and when to submit it.
Also be sure to gather all your documentation; bring originals.
3. Submit the form and necessary documents to any Pennsylvania Driver's License Center. Once they have verified that your documents are correct and that you've filled out the form properly, you will be issued a temporary driver's license printed on paper that will expire in 15 days. There are no restrictions on this license. During that time, the Pennsylvania DMV will be checking your photograph in a facial recognition database to ensure you are not applying for a license under a false name. Once that check is complete, a permanent license will be issued.
