University of Washington
The University of Washington, commonly referred to as UW or "U-Dub," is a public research university that was founded in 1861. It now functions as the flagship institution of the University of Washington system. Graduate students at the University of Washington can pursue Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees within more than ten different colleges and schools, including the College of Built Environments, the Foster School of Business, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of the Environment, the Information School, the School of Pharmacy, the Evans School of Public Affairs, the School of Public Health, the School of Social Work and the Graduate School. The University of Washington tied for 42nd in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

Washington State University is a public research university that was founded in 1890. In addition to its main campus in Pullman, the university has campuses in Spokane, Vancouver and Richland. As of 2009, the university had over 17,700 students at its Pullman location and over 25,300 students total at all locations.
The university contains ten colleges and schools, including the College of Business, the College of Engineering and Architecture, the College of Education, the College of Liberal Arts and more. Together the university's divisions offer PhD programs in 43 different fields. Washington State University tied for 106th in US News and World Report's 2010 ranking of national universities.

Gonzaga University is a private Jesuit university that was founded in 1887. As of 2009, the university had over 4,700 undergraduates and nearly 3,000 graduate students. The university contains six colleges and schools, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Engineering and Applied Science and more. The university offers a Doctor of Philosophy program in Leadership Studies and a doctoral program in law.
