What Are the Risks of Breast Implants?
Since the introduction of breast implants, there has been much confusion about the safety involved. Most women are more concerned about possible rupturing and leakage of the implants. Overall, implants are considered to be safe--but just like any medical procedure, implants have risks. Silicone implants were approved by the FDA in 2006.
Local Complications
Local complications refer to what may occur after surgery, such as infection, breast pain, necrosis (death of tissue and underlying muscle), or bruising and bleeding.
Common Complications
Many women experience pain, hardening or infection within the first three years of having had the implants.
Hematoma
Sometimes women can experience hematomas (blood or tissue fluid that will collect around the implant).
Rupture or Leakage
When an implant ruptures or leaks, it's necessary to receive additional surgery to fix the effects caused by the damage.
Other Complications
Some women may be unhappy with the appearance of their breasts due to asymmetry, loss of sensitivity to the breast or nipples, or because they feel unnatural.
Scarring
Scar tissue may develop around the implant, making it hard and deformed. The breast can often become painful and sore.
