Ultrasound Programs In Ct

Connecticut is home to a small number of ultrasound programs.

In the state of Connecticut, a small number of educational programs are available in diagnostic medical sonography, a field the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 18 percent from 2008 through 2018. Offered at hospitals and public two-year colleges, these programs carry the accreditation of the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the American Registry of American Radiologic Technologists.

Saint Francis Hospital

Established in 1897 by the Catholic Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambéry, Saint Francis Hospital is a 617-bed hospital facility in the capital city of Hartford. The hospital is home to the School of Cardiac Ultrasonography, a one-year program that begins every October. Space in the program is limited, and the hospital only accepts students with a two-year degree in an allied health field like x-ray technology, physical therapy assisting or registered nursing. The program covers techniques for performing imaging on the chest (transthorasic) and neck (transesophageal) as well as of the heart itself. Students spend five weeks in a classroom setting and then use the remaining 47 weeks to gain hands-on experience working with patients in the hospital.

Yale-New Haven Hospital

A teaching hospital for Yale University Medical School, Yale-New Haven Hospital is a 944-bed medical facility that treats more than 52,000 in-patients and 575,000 outpatients per year, according to the hospital's website. The hospital's School of Diagnostic Ultrasound offers a six-month program in echocardiography (heart ultrasounds) and a one-year program in abdominal, obstetrics and gynecology. To be considered for admission to either program, students must hold either a two-year associate degree in an allied health profession like respiratory therapy or radiologic technology or a four-year bachelor's degree in any field and previous credits in scientific and mathematics courses. Students accepted to the program spend time in clinical settings working with patients at the hospital.

A public, two-year institution, Gateway Community College is home to more than 11,000 students. The college offers a two-year associate of science degree program in diagnostic medical sonography. The curriculum includes coursework in obstetric, gynecological, vascular and abdominal sonography as well as classes in anatomy, English, mathematics, physics, communications and computer science. Students complete two full-time internships during winter and summer breaks as well as four part-time clinical rotations throughout the course of the program. This hands-on training occurs at hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities in the North Haven area. Federal and state financial aid is available to help students offset the cost of tuition.
