X-ray technicians, also called radiologic technicians, are trained to properly work x-ray and other radiologic equipment. They determine the best angles and height for imaging, and set controls to obtain the most definitive detail and contrast. Training is offered by technical schools, along with some hospitals and universities. X-ray technicians usually obtain an associate's degree.
Basic Courses
Fundamental courses required for x-ray technicians include algebra, anatomy and physiology, pathology, medical terminology and charting abbreviations.
Patient Care
Technicians then learn patient care in regard to x-ray technology, including principles of exposure, radiobiology and radiation protection.
Technical Courses
Technical aspects are then covered, including radiographic examination, fluoroscopy, computerized tomography, orthopedic x-rays and digital imaging.
Additional Courses
Additional courses required for x-ray technicians include pharmacology and patient physical assessment.
OSHA and CPR
X-ray technicians learn pertinent Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations and obtain cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
Internship
Finally, x-ray technicians work an internship to gain practical experience in an actual medical setting. Often, these employers offer permanent jobs to their interns.
