Fibroid Treatment Experience

Fibroids or uterine fibroids are benign growths in a woman's uterus that often develop with no symptoms. A woman's fibroid treatment experience depends on the seriousness of her symptoms and her childbearing plans.


Waiting


According to the Mayo Clinic, women with fibroids that are not symptomatic may have the growths monitored periodically and refrain from treatment.


Medications


Doctors may prescribe gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists or a progestin-releasing intrauterine device to control heavy bleeding. Physicians may also recommend nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for pain.


Hysterectomy


A woman with major symptoms and large fibroids may have undergo a hysterectomy to have her entire uterus removed. A hysterectomy is only permanent way to control fibroids.


Myomectomy


Women who want to bear children may have a myomectomy procedure to remove fibroids from the uterus.


Other Treatments


A physician may perfume an endometrial ablation procedure that uses heat to destroy the uterus lining or an ultrasound procedure to remove fibroids from the uterus.
