How An Infrared Thermography Camera Works

Infrared thermography cameras record thermal radiation.


Infrared thermography cameras record radiant heat waves (thermal radiation) not visible to the naked eye. Infrared cameras are used in personal, business and industrial applications to record images in the dark, diagnose medical conditions and detect heat loss.


Conversion


Infrared thermography converts invisible heat waves into visible images by capturing variations in surface temperatures. The difference in temperatures is detected through a process known as radiometry that measures differences in thermal radiation.


Color


Colors, as they are perceived by humans, are not properties of the infrared spectrum of light. Infrared thermography records temperature variations objects emit and assigns different shades and colors to different temperature ranges, from black for the coolest temperature to white for the hottest.


Diagnostics


Thermography is used in medicine to detect illnesses such as tumors and neurological issues. Medical infrared thermography cameras work by detecting minute temperature differences in abnormal, diseased tissue from the surrounding normal body temperature.
