Schools For Radiology In Pennsylvania

X-ray technicians are key players in effective patient care.


The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics projects that radiology technologist employment will increase by about 17 percent over the next 10 years. You can get a radiology technology license by attending a state certified and Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiology Technology accredited program at Pennsylvania universities, colleges, technical schools and hospitals. These programs will prepare you to take the American Registry of Radiology Technologists certification exam and to obtain a performing radiology procedures license from the Pennsylvania Boards of Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine.


Pennsylvania College of Technology


The Pennsylvania College of Technology (PCT) offers a program in radiology that satisfies the requirements for you to become a registered medical radiographer. The program consists of 4 semesters plus 2 summer semesters and can be completed in 2 to 3 years. Training is done in classrooms on campus and in affiliated local hospitals. The program includes coursework in physics, mathematics, humanities and social sciences, communications, anatomy and physiology and radiographic theories and procedures. The PCT radiology program also prepares you to further your education with a bachelor's degree in nuclear medicine technology. Tuition for the program is $12,480 per year for PA residents and $15,630 per year for non-residents as of May 2010.

University of Pennsylvania


The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine offers a radiology technologist education program and 6 month internships to gain experience in MRI or CT technologies. The radiology technologist program takes 4 full-time semesters and 2 summer semesters to complete. To graduate, you must have have an additional 15 college credits in a combination of English, math, and electives in science or arts and humanities fields. You will gain clinical experience in x-ray, MRI, and mammography with elective rotations including nuclear medicine, ultrasound, and 3D imaging. Tuition for the program is $36,208 per year as of May 2010. US News and World Report ranks ranks the University of Pennsylvania fourth among all American colleges.

Abington Memorial Hospital


Abington Memorial Hospital's School of Radiologic Technology offers a 2 year ARRT certified radiology program. The course requires 40 hours per week split between coursework and clinical rotations for 24 months. Coursework and clinical rotations cover the entire range of medical radiology technology including MRI and CT scans. The school is affiliated with Gwynedd-Mercy College that allows you to continue your education with a bachelor of science degree in radiologic technologies. Tuition for the entire 24 month program is $9,000.
