Earn a bachelor's degree in radiology and work in a variety of medical settings.
Having a bachelor's degree in radiology will allow you to work in a variety of medical settings performing tests such as radiographs, CT scans, ultrasound and MRI's. There are many colleges and universities across the country offering this degree program both on line and on campus. If you have completed high school or passed the GED, you are ready to begin a program of study toward this goal.
Instructions
1. Research several bachelor's degree programs and choose one that best suits your goals and schedule. Apply for admission to the school you have chosen and submit all required documentation along with your application. This can include an application fee, a copy of all official transcripts from previous studies and personal and professional recommendation letters.
2. Register with The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or ARRT. Acceptance into this organization involves passing a criminal and educational background check and requires adherence to their standard of ethics. This will not only look good to potential employers it can also be a requirement for entering into a bachelor's program.
3. Begin your bachelor's degree coursework following the recommended sequence by your school. A bachelor's degree in radiology requires 60 credit hours and includes general education courses such as Ethics of Healthcare and Anatomy. You will also take degree major specific courses such as Principles of Mammography. Maintain the recommended grade point average set by your individual college.
4. Complete the degree-required internship in a radiology setting. Colleges typically place you in these paid or unpaid positions at hospitals or clinics in your area. You will get hands-on experience taking x-rays, performing MRIs and mammograms. Research and complete your educational capstone, which is usually a case study in health care. You are now ready to file for graduation.
5. Obtain a registration and certification card from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or NMTCB by passing its quality examination. (See Resource 2.) Most employers require this certification and it adds prestige to your resume.
