The School of Radiography at the University of Tennessee Medical Center offers a 24-month training program in radiography technology. Coursework includes math, computer science, patient care, radiographic procedures and exposures, imaging equipment and critique, radiology management, pathology, physics, ethics, radiobiology and medical terminology. Clinical observation and experience are integrated into the didactic classroom portion of the program. In the second year, students may complete clinical rotations in nuclear medicine and radiotherapy in addition to radiography.

South College offers an Associate of Science degree with a major in radiography. Candidates must complete courses in anatomy and physiology, image production and evaluation, health care fundamentals, and patient care with a minimum grade of "C" in order to be considered for admission. An interview and ten hours of observation in a professional radiology environment are also required. This two-year program combines both theoretical and clinical instruction at all levels. Students complete general education courses in computer literacy, math, English composition, the humanities, anatomy and physiology, psychology and communications along with specialized instruction in radiography. Major course topics include patient care and assessment, image production, radiographic procedures, radiation physics, pharmacology, radiobiology, patient protection, pathology, imaging assessment and clinical applications. Graduates may upgrade their credentials by pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in health science with a concentration in radiography.

Roane State Community College
Located about 25 miles west of Knoxville, Roane State Community College offers an Associate of Applied Sciences degree in radiologic technology. This full-time five-semester program includes hands-on practical experience at various clinical sites. Since the number of applicants frequently exceeds the number of available seats, candidates must complete general education coursework in the liberal arts and sciences with a GPA of at least 2.5 in order to be considered for admission. Course topics include image analysis, radiographic procedures and processing, radiologic pathology, radiation physics, patient protection, exposure techniques and hands-on applications. The school is currently affiliated with 17 hospitals throughout the local area.
