Cite Clip Art Used In Powerpoint Presentations

If an image is labeled "Clip Art," that doesn't mean it's free to use without license or credit. When in doubt, always identify your source. Citations should be used for any images you incorporate into your PowerPoint presentations to which you do not own the rights. When preparing a presentation for school or college credit, your professor may require citations even to those images that you own to show where you obtained the artwork.

Instructions

Cite With a Caption

1. Open your PowerPoint presentation file.

2. Click on the thumbnail of the slide with the image you need to cite.

3. Click the "Insert Text Box" button at the top of the screen, or choose "Text Box" from the INSERT menu to insert a new text box on the slide.

4. Click on the slide where you want the citation to appear and start typing.

5. Enter "Image From Microsoft Clip Art" (without the quotation marks) if that is the source for your image, or to give credit to the photographer or artist, enter a citation such as "Photo by John Doe, www.johndoephotos.com, 2009" (or according to the guidelines your professor gave you).

6. Double click the text box and select the text if you want to change the font or size of the characters in the citation.

7. Make font and size selections from the Formatting palette on the right side of the screen.

8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 for any other slides with images.

Cite on a Bibliography Slide

9. Open your presentation file.

10. Add a new slide to the end of your presentation.

11. Choose a slide layout with a simple title and single text box format.

12. Type "Bibliography" in the title box.

13. Type your clip art citations into the text box in the order they appear in the presentation.

14. Identify Microsoft Clip Art as "Image From Microsoft Clip Art" and other images by their owners, download locations and copyright years or dates of download.

Cite in Slide Notes

16. Click a thumbnail on the left to navigate to the slide with the image you need to cite.

17.Click into the Note section of the slide at the bottom of the screen.
