Types of Breast Augmentations
Augmentation mammaplasty, more commonly referred to as breast augmentation surgery, is a plastic surgery procedure in which implants are used to increase the breast size or to enhance the shape and volume of the breast. Breast augmentation surgery is done primarily as a cosmetic procedure but may also be reconstructive in nature. It is a delicate procedure that requires a skilled surgeon and there are risks involved that patients should consider before pursuing this type of surgery.
Types
There are two basic types of breast augmentation procedures : breast enlargement and breast enhancement. Breast enlargement surgery is performed on women who desire larger, fuller breasts. Breast enhancement surgery is selected by women who wish to restore the fullness their breasts once had but has been lost due to such life events as a pregnancy or significant weight loss.
Implants
Both types of breast augmentation surgery involve the surgeon making incisions at inconspicuous locations on the breast and under the arm to reduce obvious visible scarring, and the insertion of breast implants. Breast implants may filled with either saline or silicone. Each type has advantages and disadvantages. Both types are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Saline implants are approved for women who are at least 18 years old while silicone implants may be used for breast augmentation in women who are at least 22 years old.
Placement
Breast implants may be positioned in one of two different placements depending on a number of factors, including the patient's physical characteristics, implant type and size and the recommendations of the surgeon. During the breast augmentation procedure, the surgeon may position the implant beneath the pectoral muscles (submuscular placement) or between the pectoral muscle and the breast tissue (submammary placement).
Warning
Both types of breast augmentation surgery involve certain risks that patients should be fully informed of and willing to assume. Risks may include bleeding, scarring, blood clots, persistent pain and changes in the sensations of the breast or nipple. Implants can rupture or leak. There are also risks associated with the required anesthesia and other complications. Medications taken by the patient and the physical condition of the patient may also affect the risk factors of breast augmentation surgery.
Misconceptions
There are a number of other types of breast cosmetic surgery that are sometimes mistakenly referred to as breast augmentation surgery. These procedures include breast reduction surgery, breast lifts, breast reconstruction and body contouring procedures after massive weight loss.
