X-rays are an important diagnostic tool for physicians.
Radiologic Technologists take X-rays, perform Computerized Axial tomography scans and administer dyes into a patient's bloodstream for diagnostic imaging. North Carolina does not have specific certification or licensing requirements for individual radiologic technologists; however, most employers look for technologists certified with the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians.
Certification Requirements
To work as a North Carolina radiology technician, you must pass the ARRT exam. If you don't pass the exam, you'll only be able to work as a radiology tech in a limited scope. ARRT licenses must be renewed every two years. In addition to passing the ARRT exam, you must also meet educational and ethics requirements.
Schooling
A course at a school leading to a radiology certificate should be sufficient preparation to take the ARRT exam. Schools that offer radiologic technologist certificates and degrees in North Carolina include the University of North Carolina, Carolina's College of Health Sciences and Duke University. Starting in January 2015 those seeking certification from ARRT must have at least an associate degree.
Ethics Requirements
To become certified by ARRT, you must "be a person of good character and must not have engaged in conduct that is inconsistent with the ARRT Rules of Ethics." You must disclose any felonies, misdemeanors and criminal procedures that resulted in a guilt plea, pretrial diversion, plea of no contest, suspended or stay of sentence or deferred adjudication before certification. You must also disclose if you have had a license or registration suspended by a disciplinary body.
