Mesa Engineering is a popular manufacturer of guitar and bass amps. Their amps come in many different styles and offer many different types of sounds. Since buying any instrument amplifier is a major purchase, it makes sense to take your time to get a feel for what you are looking for before you purchase anything. With music equipment, how it sounds to you is everything. Shop around and listen to a lot of amps before making any purchases.
Instructions
1. Decide what type of amp will work best with your instrument. Mesa offers different amps for guitars and bass guitars. Guitar amps are capable of dealing with high, piercing notes, so you may be able to use a keyboard with a guitar amp in a pinch, but the sound will not be optimal. Bass amps, on the other hand, cannot handle high, piercing notes. For best results, buy an amp that is specifically designed to amplify your instrument.
2. Go to a music store and try out a few different Mesa amps. Mesa has many amp models that use different types of vacuum tubes. Vacuum tubes modify the electrical signal and give the amplified audio a warm, full sound. Since different amp designs have distinct sounds, the only way to know for sure what it sounds like is to test it out yourself. Some music stores will even let you bring in your own instrument to test the amp with, so you can hear exactly what you're getting.
3. Narrow down your choices to just a few amps. Then compare them to one another, ranking them based on price, sound, portability, durability and resale value. You can ask the salespeople at the music store for advice, but keep in mind that many of them work for commission. Take their advice with a grain of salt.
4. Choose whatever custom options you want. For example, Mesa offers different types of vinyl surfaces, grill coverings (the mesh that covers the speaker), wood cabinets and finishes.
5. Buy whichever amp you choose from the music-equipment supplier that charges the least amount of money but offers the best warranty. Many online retailers offer great deals, but you may have to pay extra for shipping Mesa amps, which are heavy. One solution to this is to ask your local music retailer if they will match the online retailer's price. More often than not, they will.
