Students learn to utilize ultrasound technology in a clinical setting.
Ultrasound technology produces images with the use of high-frequency sound waves. An ultrasound technologist is also referred to as a diagnostic medical sonographer. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008, diagnostic medical sonographers earned an average annual salary between $52,570 and $73,680. There are two schools in Houston, Texas that offer programs certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) as well as hospital-based programs.
Houston Community College
Houston Community College offers an advanced technical certificate in diagnostic medical sonography. This program is four semesters in length and can be completed in 16 months, including clinical experience off-campus. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Sanford Brown College
Sanford Brown College has campuses throughout the country. Its location in Houston offers a 70-week certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography. This program includes on-campus lectures and laboratory work as well as clinical experience off-campus. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Harris County Hospital District's School of Diagnostic Medical Imaging
Harris County Hospital District's School of Diagnostic Medical Imaging offers a certificate in diagnostic medical sonography. This is a hospital-based program that can be completed in 20 months. Students attend class at Ben Taub General Hospital and can complete clinical work there, or at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital or Casa de Amigos Health Center.
