Injuries to your body can often be hard to diagnose if no blood or bruising is evident. Breaking a bone or receiving an injury to your head are just two examples of this. Radiology labs play a large role in these instances because they provide doctors with inside glimpses of the brain and various body parts. Running these labs and taking care of patients using the services is the job of radiology technicians. Although the job can be very rewarding, a certain amount of knowledge and skill are required to become certified in the state of Vermont and allowed to practice. This is why it is important to learn in advance and follow the process of become a radiology technician in Vermont.
Instructions
1. Apply for admission to a radiology technician program at a college or university in Vermont. All new radiology technicians in Vermont must complete an educational program in radiology to become licensed. The three colleges that offer this program are Southern Vermont College, Champlain College and College of St. Joseph. Since competition is fierce due to a limited number of spots in each program, you should apply early and ensure that you meet all the requirements to get in to the radiology program.
2. Pass the prerequisite classes for the radiology programs. While applying for admission to the radiology program of your choice, you can work on completing the prerequisites that are necessary before beginning the program. Human anatomy, speech and English are some of the most common prerequisites for radiology majors, but you should check with the individual program to ensure you are taking the right prerequisite classes to meet their specific program requirements.
3. Graduate from the radiology program by passing classes and completing clinicals. Radiology programs in Vermont take 2 years to complete. This includes time spent in lecture and lab classes as well as time spent performing clinicals, which provides you with the opportunity to work in actual radiology labs with real patients needing your services.
4. Apply for certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Vermont requires radiology technicians to be certified through the ARRT before the state will grant a license. Certification can be obtained by completing an application, paying a $150 application fee, passing the national certification exam, submitting proof of graduation from an educational program and adhering to the ethical standards set up for radiology technicians by the ARRT.
5. Take and pass the national radiology exam. Passing the national certification exam is a requirement for certification by ARRT. You can register for the exam at the same time you make application for certification.
6. Apply for license in Vermont. After you have received your certification from ARRT, you can apply for a license to become a radiology technician in Vermont. You will need to submit an application, $100 application fee, transcript showing proof of graduation from a radiology program and a copy of your ARRT certification card. This should be sent to the Board of Radiologic Technology, which oversees the licensing process for radiology technicians.
7. Keep your license current by renewing every two years. This is a requirement, much like many health occupations. This ensures you are current with the latest treatment and advances in the field.
