Mri Technician Average Salary

MRI technicians operate Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanners.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the specialties available to a radiologic technologist or technician. This particular position uses an MRI scanner to produce a three-dimensional image of the interior of a patient's body. An MRI uses non-ionizing radio frequencies to produce several cross-sectional images. Education for this job typically requires a formal training program that lasts about 24 months. However, a bachelor's degree is also available. Although certification for the device is optional, most states require licensing to operate this technology.

Experience

According to PayScale, MRI technician salaries depend on experience, with those just starting out averaging $39,305 to $50,000 annually, as of April 2010. Those with one to four years experience make $37,232 to $53,493, while those with five to nine years earn $49,726 to $62,138. Finally, those with 10 to 19 years experience make $51,282 to $77,389, and those with 20 or more years receive $57,914 to $71,768 per year.

Employer

The type of employer can determine earnings, according to PayScale. For example, hospitals pay $40,695 to $61,374, while the federal government gives out $35,375 to $50,868. Workers in private practice make $46,202 to $68,400, while those working for a private company can expect $47,173 to $68,728. The industry also affects pay. Those working in health care earn $40,695 to $69,609, those in medical services receive $50,964 to $61,042, and those in radiology clinics are compensated at $47,000 to $63,772.

Location

According to PayScale, location can make a big difference in income. Those in California have the highest range at $50,000 to $90,000 per year, with Texas workers following closely at $36,407 to $80,000. Workers in Illinois earn $32,556 to $52,438, while those in Arizona make $25,434 to $60,000. Finally, those in New York receive $59,495 to $77,902, and those in Florida make $45,000 to $58,000.

Other

As with other professions, according to PayScale, males can receive more money ($45,781 to $69,411) than females ($44,236 to $61,213). Those who are Registered Technologists in Radiography average $39,000 to $50,704, while those with a certificate from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists get $43,714 to $64,950.

Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for radiologic technologists is expected to grow by 17 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is faster than average for all occupations. Much of this demand is due to the aging population, who incur more injuries and illnesses. Such incidents require diagnostic imaging. Hospitals will remain the primary employer of MRI technicians. However, many doctors offices and imaging centers will provide employment since they can afford the technology that is growing cheaper.
