What schools offer orthopedic technician training?
An orthopedic technologist works with orthopedic surgeons and other medical professionals to care for patients who have broken bones and njuries to their joints. Generally, orthopedic techs apply and remove casts, braces and splints, but they also work directly with patients to teach the proper methods of care and treatment. Receiving college-level training is usually required, and many schools offer this degree program.
New Hampshire Technical Institute
The orthopedic technician program offered by New Hampshire Technical Institute can be completed in one year, with courses in the fall and spring semesters. During the summer following completion of all coursework, students participate in clinical externships to gain hands-on skills. Courses include study in the fields of medical terminology, sterile technique, traction, clinical ethics, orthopedic patient care, orthopedic anatomy and physiology, and casting and splinting. After graduation, students are eligible to sit for the National Board for the Certification of Orthopedic Technologists exam. The orthopedic technology program is eligible for financial aid.

Virginia College
Students graduating from Virginia College receive an associate of science degree in orthopedic technology. The program requires approximately one year to complete and enables gradates to sit for the licensing exam administered by the National Board for the Certification of Orthopedic Technologists. Students receive training in casting and splints, orthopedic anatomy and physiology, and patient care. In addition to the orthopedic tech classes, students will take courses in medical terminology, office procedures and insurance coding. The school offers financial aid options.

Boston Reed College
Boston Reed College offers an extensive orthopedic technician program that combines 240 hours of clinical externship work with 182 hours of classroom training to prepare graduates to sit for the national certification exam. Students will receive training in orthopedic anatomy, basic science in orthopedics, disorders on the skeletal system, injuries, handling trauma and the application of casts, splints, braces and traction. At the end of their classroom training, students are placed in externship programs. The college offers a wide variety of financial aid options to assist students in paying for their education.
