According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for clinical lab workers, including EKG technicians, is expected to grow 26 percent by 2016 due to the increasing aging population and the higher percentage of the aging population having heart-related disease or problems. Medical Professional Institute
The EKG Technician program at the Medical Professional Institute is a series of seven courses ranging from 20 to 40 hours each, and includes a 140-hour externship working with patients, performing 100 venipunctures, 25 skin/heel punctures and 20 EKGs at an approved local health care center. The program takes ten weeks to complete, and MPI will also assist students with their job search after they graduate. Requirements for admittance for the program include a high school diploma or GED, interview with the admissions office, completed application and an entrance exam.

Regan Career Institute
Regan Career Institute's EKG Technician Course is a 50-hour program completed over six courses taught on Saturdays and Sundays. After completion of the course, a student will be able to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians or National Center for Competency Testing exams for their national EKG certification examination. Curriculum includes, but is not limited to Introduction and Indications for EKG Testing, Use of Testing Equipment and Psychological Conditioning of the Patient. Session times and cost vary.

California State University, East Bay
For students in the San Francisco area, California State University, East Bay offers an EKG Technician Certificate. This ten-week, 50-hour course prepares students with all necessary skills needed to take the ASPT exam, along with any other state or national certification exams needed to get an entry-level EKG technician position, and on-hands experience in the classroom. For 2010, the tuition cost for the course is $1,450.
