Why Does My Ankle Swell With Plantar Fasciitis

Nearly 2 million Americans each year suffer from Plantar Fasciitis, a condition affecting the heel of the foot. Ankle pain and swelling may result from Plantar Fasciitis, which has a variety of causes, mostly related to muscles. Luckily, the condition is treatable and preventable. Depending on severity, treatments can range from resting at home to surgery in a hospital

Definition

Plantar Fasciitis is the inflammation of a band of tissue running across the bottom of the foot.

Swelling

If the inflamed tissue irritates a nerve, the ankle may become painful and swollen.

Causes

Plantar Fasciitis can be caused by high foot arches pulling on muscles and tight calf muscles. Persons with flat feet often suffer from Plantar Fasciitis, due to the constant pressure on the flat arches leading to muscles stretching from the heel bones.

Relief

Taking pressure off the feet, using insoles and ice massage will help to reduce swelling and alleviate pain.

Prevention

According to Dr. Howard Osterman, proper stretching and footwear will help prevent Plantar Fasciitis.

Treatment

Treatments range from rest to using arch supports to surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.
