Nursing Program
A registered nurse must complete an accredited program in nursing. The options include an associate's degree in nursing, a bachelor's degree in nursing or a diploma program. The diploma program takes place in a hospital rather than in a college. A bachelor's in nursing offers more opportunities for advancing to supervisory, consulting or teaching positions. For all nursing education options, the students complete both classroom learning and hands-on experiences in health-care settings.
NCLEX
After completing the nursing program, students take the National Council Licensure Examination, commonly known as NCLEX. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing created the exam, which is required of all registered nurses. The candidate must pass the exam to earn her nursing license.
State Licensing Requirements
A nursing education and the NCLEX is required by all states for a license in the nursing field. Each state determines any additional requirements beyond the education and exam. Fingerprinting and a background check are common requirements since nurses have direct contact with patients and access to personal information. A nursing license from one state allows nurses to apply for licensure by endorsement in another state. An RN must renew her license after a designated period, which varies by state. Some states require continuing education while others renew the license without any special requirements.
Specialized Training
Nurses who wish to work in a specialty area like oncology or pediatrics need additional education and training. A master's degree in the specialty area is sometimes necessary.
