Ultrasound technicans use specialized equipment that creates images with sound waves.
For students in South Dakota, only one academic is institution available that provides training for ultrasound technicians. They are fortunate enough, however, to have some of the country's top medical organizations in neighboring states. Prospective sonography students have the opportunity to earn certificates and degrees in specialized areas of ultrasound technology. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs accredits these programs, which enables students be eligible for certification through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Southeast Technical Institute
Southeast Technical Institute, located in Sioux Falls, offers students the opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science in one of three specialized ultrasound areas. The programs include cardiovascular ultrasound technology, vascular ultrasound technology, and diagnostic medical sonography, which has an emphasis on abdominal and obstetric and gynecological ultrasound technology. Each of the programs provides specialized instruction through classroom and laboratory-based courses. The laboratory courses allow students to apply and demonstrate proper patient care and ultrasound techniques. Students must also participate in two to three clinical rotations. The seven-month clinical experience will place students at various medical centers through the United States.

Mayo School of Health Sciences
The Mayo Clinic campus, located in Rochester, Minnesota, is one of the most advanced medical complexes in the world. It offers extensive research and educational facilities including the Mayo School of Health Sciences. At this school, students have the opportunity to participate in a 21-month diagnostic medical sonography program. The curriculum provides sonography training in several areas including abdominal, vascular, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology. During the program, students will complete clinical rotations in Mayo Clinic's state-of-the-art ultrasound and vascular laboratories. The rotations will include experiences in each of the specialized areas. The Mayo School of Health Sciences also offers an echocariography program in which students can learn cardiac ultrasound techniques.

BryanLGH College of Health Sciences
Located in Lincoln, Nebraska, BryanLGH College of Health Sciences offers three concentrated sonography training programs. Students are able to acquire an Associate of Science in adult cardiac sonography, vasular sonography or diagnostic medical sonography. Through a partnership with ByranLGH Medical Center, one on the Midwest's most respected medical organizations, the school provides students with an exceptional learning experience. The comprehensive curriculum includes general education courses, in-depth specialty training, and over 1,200 hours of clinical experience. Students will learn on state-of-the-art equipment including human patient simulators and health profession skill labs. Prior to graduation, students will also complete a board review to prepare them for the registry examinations.
