LVN nursing schools provide academic training for licensed vocational nurses.
An LVN is licensed vocational nurse. LVNs are required by state law to complete a term of training and certification at an authorized facility. LVN nursing schools teach students what they need to know to become effective nurses. 1. Investigate where the program is being held. All LVN nursing schools hold classes in one of four places: at a hospital, at a community college, at a school of nursing or online. Hospital-based programs allow graduates to interact with members of the medical community during their training. Community college LVN nursing programs offer low-cost tuition. Nursing schools are specifically devoted to training nurses exclusively. Online programs offer convenience but may be more costly than other options.
2. Research entrance requirements. Most LVN nursing schools require applicants to have at least a GED. Some programs prefer candidates who have spent time volunteering in a hospital. LVN nursing schools held at community colleges may have waiting lists to enter the program. Contact the admissions office at each nursing program. Confirm the requirements in writing in advance before you submit an application.
3. Investigate where candidates attend clinical training. An LVN must complete a term of clinical education in order to graduate. Some programs are affiliated with specific hospitals. Students at those LVN nursing schools must complete their training at this hospital and only this hospital. Other programs provide students with a list of hospitals and nursing homes from which to choose. If you have a preference for a certain hospital, look into programs that work with that hospital.
4. Research how many students graduate within two years. Most LVNs can complete their training in less than two years. All LVN nursing schools should be able to provide data about the overall time that it takes the typical candidate to enter the nursing field. Programs with high dropout rates or longer-than- average program completion dates may not adequately screen admissions candidates or prepare them well enough for demands of a nursing job.
5. Investigate the NCLEX passing rate. The NCLEX is the National Counsel Licensure Exam for LVNs. All states mandate that licensed practical nurses pass the exam before they can gain employment. An LVN nursing school should be able to provide statistics about the NCLEX. LVN nursing schools track how many candidates pass the exam on the first try as well as the scores they get on the exam. You should have access to this data before you apply. School officials should also be able to tell how you how they help students prepare for the exam.
