The Insurance Division of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic growth is the agency that regulates the state's insurance licensing process. If you wish to become a Michigan licensed insurance producer, you must take the necessary pre-licensing education and training, then pass the state exam. Without a valid license, you won't be able to buy or sell insurance on behalf of an insurance company and receive commissions from the sale.
Types of Insurance Licenses
Michigan has several types of insurance licenses including accident and health, property marine, life, personal lines and more. Each license covers different aspects of the insurance field, so you need to decide which area you want to focus on before starting your training.
Insurance License Application
If your goal is to become a licensed agent, you must complete the electronic resident licensing application online registration through the National Insurance Producer's Registry. This begins the process that leads to your training then becoming a licensed insurance professional in the state of Michigan. You have six months after filing the application to take this state exam.
Pre-Licensing Education
Before obtaining an insurance license, you must take a pre-determined number of course hours as mandated by the state of Michigan. The course hours vary depending on the type of license. For example, accident and health candidates must take 20 hours of pre-licensing education while property and casualty are required to take 40 hours. When you have completed the required course hours, you'll receive a certificate of completion from the education provider. State Approved Insurance Educators
The Michigan Department of Insurance doesn't allow you to take classes from any insurance school; the school must be pre-approved by the department. However, a database on the department's website lists all of the approved providers along with the types of courses they offer. Access the database to find a pre-licensing educator that is convenient for you.
Insurance Exam Content
After taking the necessary training and pre-licensing classes, take advantage of the free content outline brochure offered by Prometric. Prometric is the company that administers the Michigan insurance state licensing exams. The exam content outline provides a listing of the type of questions you'll see on the state exam. It will be a helpful study guide.
Taking the State Exam
Once you have successfully completed the pre-licensing requirements and have received your certificate of completion, you can take the sate licensing exam. Your scores are automatically sent to the state. If you pass the exam, the state will issue your insurance license. If you did not pass, you can take the test again.
