Rights Of Individuals With Developmental Disabilities

People with disabilities often face difficulties that regular people do not experience.


Developmental disabilities are life-long physical or mental disabilities that slow down a person's normal development. Individuals with developmental disabilities cannot always take care of their needs and need assistance carrying out the daily activities of life. They may need help in the following areas: independent living, economic self-sufficiency, learning, mobility, communication, self care and self direction. To protect those with disabilities, the government set out rights that they should be able to enjoy.


Education and Training


People with developmental disabilities have the right to education so that they can reach their full academic potential. Education has the purpose of increasing a disabled person's level of understanding of the surrounding world and more accurate response towards the world, themselves and others. People with developmental disabilities have the right to attend special education schools and learn basic literacy and numeracy skills. There are also special educational centers that teach vocational skills that can be used by a disabled person to earn employment income.


At Home or Community Support


People with developmental disabilities can either live with their families or at group homes. Some are even able to live alone in rented apartments. They very often need support from their family members or a specially designated members of the community in performing the daily activities of life. The DSP, or Direct Support Worker, may help the disabled person with specific tasks such as budgeting or paying bills, or monitor their whole lives. Sometimes the disabled person needs help finding friends or taking up hobbies, which the DSP can also facilitate.


Employment Support


People with developmental disabilities have the right to employment support which can take two forms. They can either participate in the integrated employment or work within the segregated business services. If they are able to work in the integrated employment setting they may need assistance polishing their skill set to find the employment, dealing with employer or protecting themselves from bullies. If they work in segregated setting, they may need assistance learning new skills to move to integrated employment.


Day-Services Support


Individuals with disabilities need assistance with life skills, center-based activities and external activities. They need to posses life skills such as cooking, cleaning, going places in order to function independently in their lives. Center-based activities such as crafts and hobbies help the disabled people to achieve greater satisfaction in their lives. External activities that aim at reaching out and doing things away from the immediate community encourage the disabled to be more independent.
