Becoming a fingerprint technician isn't as easy as it sounds. There's a lot of information that needs to be gathered before going to school and especially before applying for jobs.
Your Local Police
If you're interested in becoming a fingerprint technician, start by talking to your local police department. Set up an informational interview with one of their fingerprint technicians. Ask specific questions, such as what education is required and what kind of experience is needed. They will tell you what your state, the local police station, and labs require for hiring a fingerprint technician.
School?
School is not necessarily the best way to get the education needed to become a fingerprint technician. Sometimes agencies want to hire and train them within their organization. But it depends on the potential employer. Contact a school that offers the fingerprint technician program and ask them what sort of prospects you can look forward to if you complete their program.
IAI Training
The International Association of Identification (IAI) offers training and certificates. It's a good idea to contact them for information. However, most of the time the certificates they offer are for people who already have work experience in the field. But their website offers a great deal of information.
Experience
Experience is key for becoming a fingerprint technician. There are organizations that will hire and train prospects from within. Talk to everyone in your area about gain experience, make connections, and make your interest known to all the local organizations.
