How Does Breast Augmentation Work

Things to Consider Before Resorting to Surgery

Breast augmentation, also known as a mammaplasty, is a surgical operation to enlarge a woman's breasts. A woman may decide to undergo this type of surgery because she is not happy with her current bust size. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and even age, can all contribute to changes in breast size and shape. Generally as a woman ages, her breasts droop due to the forces of gravity. However, there are many things to consider before undergoing any kind of surgery. There are certain risks, such as infection, scarring, rejection or even death. There are other less invasive alternatives which can help to improve the shape, size and tone of your breasts. For instance, breast exercises can help to lift and slightly enlarge the breasts because pectoral muscles give the breasts added support. Breast laser surgery can lift and tighten the breasts, giving them a larger more up lifted appearance. Women with very small breasts can also opt to wear a bra with some padding. Some women have also reported great results with herbal breast enlargement pills.

Finding a Doctor

Some women are still not happy with the non-surgical options to enlarge their breasts, so they opt for breast augmentation. The first step in the process is to find a good plastic surgeon. Ask someone you know for a recommendation or consult with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for a referral. The next step in the process is to meet with the doctor for a consultation. The surgeon will perform an examination and check medical history to decide if the patient is a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery. If the patient has a heart problem or allergies to certain drugs, the doctor may decide not to do the surgery.

The Surgery

On the day of surgery a woman will be advised not to eat or drink at least eight to 10 hours prior to the surgery. Her blood pressure and vital signs will be checked prior to surgery as an extra precaution. She will change into a gown, and then be advised to stand while the surgeon uses a black marker to draw on her breasts. The surgeon will then mark the areas where he will be cutting or lifting tissue. The doctor will then leave to scrub up for surgery.

The woman will then be taken directly to an operating room where the surgery will take place. Medical assistants will have all the surgical tools cleaned, sterilized and ready to go. The woman will then be put under general anesthesia and drift off to sleep. A standard breast augmentation surgery will take about one to three hours depending on the type of procedure.

Cost and Various Procedures

The cost of breast augmentation is quite expensive depending on the type of procedure. For instance, doctors can insert the implant through an incision above the belly button, areola, underneath the breast or even through the armpit. The most standard procedure involves inserting the implant through a tiny incision made underneath the areola. This type of breast enlargement surgery costs $7,000 to $10,000 on average.

The doctor makes an incision roughly an inch or so long under the areola. After the incisions are made the doctor will create a pocket for the implant to go in. He will work on one breast at a time. The plastic encasing for the implant is folded up to fit inside the hole. It is then squeezed through and flattened into place directly under or on top of the pectoral muscles. Most women opt for the implant to be placed under the muscle for a more even toned look. Saline solution is then gradually pumped inside the implant until the desired size is achieved. Silicone implants are already pre-filled, so if the woman opted for this type of implant it will simply be squeezed inside the tiny incision and set in place by the doctor. After the surgery is complete the woman's chest will be wrapped with ace bandages and she will then be wheeled to the recovery room.

Recovery from breast augmentation surgery can be a long and painful process. The breasts will initially be higher and over time they will naturally drop to a more natural level. The first two weeks are the most painful and the pain continues to lesson over six to eight weeks. Doctors advise patients not to do any heavy lifting in addition to resting and drinking fluids as often as possible.
