Cosmetic surgeons can obtain grants for research that advances the field.
Plastic, or cosmetic, surgery deals with the reconstruction or correction of the features, shape or function of body parts. Cosmetic surgery researchers may qualify for grant funding from foundations and organizations, especially if their research explores new ways to advance the practice of cosmetic surgery or assists with certain abnormalities, including deformities like the cleft lip and palate.
Academic Scholarships
The American Association of Plastic Surgeons offers two-year faculty research scholarships to surgeons who are pursuing academic careers in reconstructive or plastic surgery. These funds must be used to set up independent research programs, and eligible candidates are those who have proven they can independently conduct research. Other eligibility requirements include having received a full-time faculty appointment at accredited medical school and having finished the chief residency program--working as a resident who has been selected to supervise other residents--at a qualified hospital within the past five years. As of 2010, the grant award was $30,000 per year to be used for salaries and other research costs. This award is eligible for one renewal. Upon receiving the award, grantees are required to attend the following two annual meetings of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons to report on their progress.

Cleft Palate Foundation Grants
The Cleft Palate Foundation offers five research grants in the areas of cleft palate, cleft lip and other craniofacial problems.
CPF's Junior Investigator Research Grants seek to develop scientific investigators, and these grants are open to new investigators who are either enrolled in graduate training programs at accredited universities, are no more than five years past their PhDs or specialty training, or who currently hold no more than the academic rank of assistant professor. Two grants are given out under this program, and the maximum amount for each grant was $5,000 as of 2010.
CPF's Cleft Lip/Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies Grant promotes scientific research that evaluates curative and developmental problems related to these abnormalities. The grant is open to junior and senior investigators, and the grant amount was $10,000 as of 2010. This grant is sponsored by he American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
The Etiology of Cleft Lip/Palate Anomalies Research Grant promotes scientific research relating to the cause, diagnosis and treatment of these anomalies, and junior and senior investigators receiving the awards were granted $10,000 as of 2010.
The Children's Craniofacial Association of Dallas, Texas, sponsors the CCA/CPF Research Grant, which offers $5,000 to junior and senior investigators to study both the treatment and developmental issues related to these anomalies.

AAFPRS Grants
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is an association of reconstructive and facial plastic surgeons, and it represents surgeons within this profession around the world. The association offered nine grants as of 2010, and these grants are awarded for research and merit.
Research grants like the Ben Shuster Memorial Award and Residency Travel Award are given for outstanding research papers.
The Ira Tresley Research Award is given out for innovative facial plastic surgery research. Grant amounts for research are generally around $1,000, and interested parties must fill out applications and/or submit their research papers to be considered.
While the Sir Harold Delf Gillies grant is also for excellent research papers, it is selected from papers written by fellows in AAFPRS Foundation Fellowship Programs, which provide facial plastic surgery training at the postgraduate level.
Merit awards are given out to AAFPRS members who have made exceptional contributions to the field or the community, and members must be nominated to receive these awards. Actual award amounts vary.
